Greetings from Coates Chiropractic!
Happy Fall!
Look at us here at Coates Chiropractic, going all high tech! I finally decided to take the plunge and begin sending newsletters via email, both for the sake of trees and my pocketbook, as it costs almost 50 cents to mail a newsletter!Dr. Brooke Coates and her family

Anyhow, I hope all of you are happy and healthy as this fall sets in. It always takes me a bit to remember how I dealt with rainy days that get dark at 4:30. I think the key is that I kept going outside despite the dampness. I still ran at Point Defiance, but with a waterproof coat and I just expected to get muddy. Miserable at first thought, but exhilarating once it is over with! We still went for walks, just with hats and gloves. Once the snow arrives, then downhill and cross country skiing or snowshoeing day trips are an option.  They always make me feel like I’ve been away for a while. Point being, keep going outside to stay happy and healthy during the winter months!

Otherwise, it has been a great summer – some time away but mostly we were here in Washington. I must admit that this summer with a 2 and a 4 year old has not been my most action packed one! There were some hikes, bike rides, trips to the coast and then lots of going to the pool, eating outside, playing in the sprinklers, walking the dogs, learning to ride a bike and doing usual summer stuff. It is amazing how much time can pass you by while taking care of the basics. Lorrie, on the other hand took a three week vacation to Europe. She spent time in France, Italy, took a Mediterranean cruise to four Greek Islands and Croatia. WOW!

Finally, Coates Chiropractic is celebrating our 9th anniversary in November. I can’t believe it has been 9 years since I opened my doors! In celebration, you will receive a free adjustment for every person you refer to my office during the month of November. In addition, the first week of November will include free exams for new patients, snacks and festivities! It really doesn’t get any better than that!

All of the best to you and your family this fall!

Patient Profile
We would like to spotlight the Moller family; Beth, Jim, Anna, Megan and Mitchell.Moller Family Picture

The Moller's have been patients here since 2004. Beth was the first to come to Coates Chiropractic, complaining of low back, hip pain and sciatica with walking. Her husband Jim began coming as well, initially complaining of neck pain and headaches, but now he comes every two to three weeks and we never know if he will be feeling great or have some surprise ailment. Both Megan (12) and Anna (16) get adjusted periodically.

Megan is an expert unicycler and has been active in the Young Ambassadors, who do fabulous gymnastic shows, and needs a tune up to stay in tip top shape. Anna is adopted and has a multitude of special needs. She comes to get adjustments just to stay feeling her best.

It has truly been a pleasure taking care of the Moller family the past 5 years and we look forward to helping them stay healthy and well adjusted over the years to come!

Vitamin D is a Powerful Flu Fighter
Dr. John Cannell, founder of the Vitamin D Council, first introduced the hypothesis that influenza is merely a symptom of vitamin D deficiency in the paper Epidemic Influenza and Vitamin D, published in the journal Epidemiology and Infection two years ago, followed up with another study published in the Virology Journal last year.

The findings were confirmed by a new study -- the largest and most nationally representative of its kind to date -- that involved about 19,000 Americans. It found that people with the lowest blood vitamin D levels reported having significantly more recent colds or cases of the flu.
In conclusion, lead author Dr. Adit Ginde stated:

"The findings of our study support an important role for vitamin D in prevention of common respiratory infections, such as colds and the flu. Individuals with common lung diseases, such as asthma or emphysema, may be particularly susceptible to respiratory infections from vitamin D deficiency."

There is so much compelling evidence, that I believe optimizing your vitamin D levels is one of the absolute best strategies for avoiding infections of ALL kinds, and vitamin D deficiency is likely the TRUE culprit behind the seasonality of the flu -- not the flu virus itself.

The Key to Affordable Health Care: Healthier Lifestyles from Mercola.com
Scientists are reporting a breakthrough therapy to lower the risk of developing the most common and deadly chronic diseases by about 80 percent.

The therapy is called taking care of yourself: not smoking, exercising regularly, eating a healthy diet and maintaining a healthy weight.

Obesity is costing the American healthcare system more than $100 million annually. Diabetes costs nearly $150 billion, cancer care costs more than $200 billion, and heart disease costs more than $300 billion annually.

The key to affordable healthcare is disease prevention, not treatment.

The Cumulative Protective Effect of a Healthy Lifestyle
is Greater Than Any Medicine
This European study, involving over 23,000 Germans, shows just how fantastic the results of a healthy lifestyle can be.

The cumulative effects of just four healthy factors: not smoking, exercising regularly, eating a healthy diet, and maintaining a healthy weight, resulted in:

  • An average of 36 percent reduced risk of ALL cancers
  • A 93 percent reduced risk of diabetes
  • An 81 percent reduced risk of heart disease

These are three of the most common types of chronic diseases, and as you all know, chronic diseases are very expensive – you have to pay to treat it for the rest of your life.
To get you started, these 10 Steps to Optimal Health are BASIC tenets of health, based on simple truths that will never go out of style that are not dependent on the latest fads concocted by some special interest group:

  1. Manage your stress
  2. Get optimal exposure to sunlight or supplement with vitamin D
  3. Drink plenty of clean water
  4. Limit your exposure to toxins
  5. Consume healthy fats (omega 3s)
  6. Eat a healthy diet that’s right for your nutritional type (paying very careful attention to keeping your insulin levels down)
  7. Eat plenty of raw food
  8. Optimize your insulin and leptin levels
  9. Exercise!
  10. Get plenty of good sleep

By adhering to these basic tenets of optimal health – the basics of a healthy lifestyle, not just a temporary fix for a particular ailment -- you are building a healthy mind and body, and thereby safeguarding yourself against a multitude of health problems and serious diseases.

FDA Approved - Does it mean anything?

We have been too trusting of the FDA and government agencies that are supposed to research and control the products that we put in/on our bodies such as: medications, food, food additives, and other products.

The FDA should be testing products to make sure they are safe BEFORE they are put on the market. Instead products are approved as quickly as possible with little to no research and then if problems start being reported they will investigate (it could be many years before a dangerous product is pulled from the public.)

Some examples of FDA products that shouldn’t be approved:

  • Margarine- Did you know: A study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition in 1967, compared two populations in India, where the only difference in the diet was the type of fat they consumed. The group that used margarine instead of butter had a 15 times greater heart disease rate than the group using butter. A follow-up study twenty years later found similar results.
  • Artificial Sweeteners- Did you know: artificial sweeteners have been liked to seizures, tumors, headaches, death, depression, and many other symptoms - and it was approved by the FDA?
  • Medications such as Vioxx- Did you know the Vioxx Timetable? The FDA approved Vioxx in May 1999. In March of 2000 Merk revealed results to a study suggesting that Vioxx patients have double the rate of serious cardiovascular problems than those on other nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. It was not until September 2004 that Merk withdrew Vioxx from the US.

Some thoughts on the
Swine Flu Vaccine…

To get or not get a vaccination is a personal choice, but I do believe that each person needs to be informed about their choice.

On July 29th two letters were released to The Daily Mail. The first was written by Professor Elizabeth Miller, head of the Health Protection Agency's Immunization Department.  It warned neurologists that the influenza vaccine of 1976 was linked to a devastating neurological condition called Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS). "The vaccines used to combat an expected swine influenza pandemic in 1976 were shown to be associated with GBS and were withdrawn from use.” Guillain-Barre Syndrome is an autoimmune disorder that affects the central nervous system. Initially there may be weakness or altered sensations that mostly affect the extremities, but if the disease progresses it can paralyze your whole body. Once the diaphram is paralyzed the result is death.

A second letter has also surfaced with a warning about the swine flu vaccine. It's from the Association of British Neurologists and is authored by Dr. Rustam Al-Shahi Salman and Professor Patrick Chinnery. It says "Following the 1976 program of vaccination against swine influenza in the US, a retrospective study found a possible eight-fold increase in the incidence of GBS."

Adding to the concern, Dr. Tom Jefferson from the Cochrane Collaboration is on the record saying "New vaccines never behave in the way you expect them to. It may be that there is a link to GBS, which is certainly not something I would wish on anybody. But it could end up being anything because one of the additives in one of the vaccines is a substance called squalene, and none of the studies we've extracted have any research on it at all."

In other words, what we really have with the swine flu vaccine is an untested, potentially dangerous cocktail of chemicals and viral fragments that could plausibly be linked to a devastating neurological condition. I believe it is important to learn both the positive and negative sides about this vaccination. There surely are some negative neurological side effects that both the government as well as pharmaceutical companies are not sharing with us. Remember, knowledge is power!

What can you do naturally to prevent getting the swine flu?
Boost your immune system by doing the following:

  • Get adjusted regularly
  • Exercise
  • Drink lots of water
  • Eat lots of fruits, vegetables and whole foods
  • Take a good multi-vitamin
  • Avoid as much sugar as possible
  • Avoid chemicals that are toxic to your body (such as artificial sweeteners) and only eat real foods – this does not include fat free, sugar free, low carb. Only the real deal!
